On the Drifter 800, there has been reported problems of the bike sputtering and behaving as though it were running low on fuel despite having full tanks.
The situation could be either overfilling the tank resulting in vent blockage and vapor lock. Or a blockage of the gas cap/tank venting system.
You can verify vapor lock by stopping and opening the tank when the bike starts sputtering. If the bike's engine returns to normal, you know you have a blockage.
Ensure you don't overfill the bike. Level should be below the neck spout.
You can also blow out the gas cap vents, using a straw. Sometimes water, fuel or something solid will obstruct the vent. |

Power Commander for VN1500 Drifter |
The PC is a fuel injection and ignition timing (on some models) adjustment unit that plugs "inline" with the bikes' stock ECU. The PC uses original equipment style connectors so that no splicing or cutting of the harness is required. Most installations take less than 15 minutes, some as little as 5 minutes. Changes are made to the bikes fuel and ignition curves via the PC's onboard microprocessor. Using this technology we are able to offer a large area of adjustment without making any permanent changes to the bikes' ECU (electronic control unit). Removing the PC returns the bike to its previous stock condition. The Power Commander can be ordered preprogrammed with a your choice of several settings, based on the modifications to your bike. The unit also comes complete with software and cable link that allows you to change between different maps or make adjustments to a map file. |

Any power sports vehicle comes equipped with an ECU map developed by the OEM manufacturer to pass federal regulations. The stock ECU map does allow for small fuel changes to compensate for temperature changes, altitude changes,...etc, but does not allow the end user to make adjustments for additional modifications which affect the air flow like after market exhaust systems and air filters. EFI controllers are just like buying a jet kit for a carburetor vehicle. Even a stock vehicle can benefit from an EFI controller, but if you plan to do any other performance modifications to your vehicle then you should start with an EFI controller which allows you to tune the fuel. |

The Solution: A Refined Cycle custom made mount adapter that will allow you to mount ALMOST ANY custom, Harley or chopper headlight on almost ANY METRIC BIKE. This adapter opens your choices to any 7/16" bolt on headlight out there. See picture of the light shown for example. -Made from quality Billet Aluminum -CNC Machined for acuaracy -Professionaly polished to a high shine The HM2 will fit bikes with mounting holes from 3" - 5.9" between centers WITHOUT DRILLING into your triple tree. OR You can simply drill mounting holes about 3"-5" on center. Mounting holes are for 1/4"-20 bolts or equiv. metric size available from a local hardware store. You may be thinking, why not just drill a large hole in the center of my triple tree for the headlight to mount to. Here are a few reasons why NOT to do that. Most triple trees have gussets or extra metal in the middle that would make drilling a hole very difficult. Drilling a large hole in the middle weakens the strength of the part much more than 2 small holes off center. If you mess up and drill a large mounting hole a little off center, your light will be off center. BUT, if you drill 2 small mounting holes slightly off center, the mount has slotted holes to account for that and you can adjust the centering. Most aftermarket lights are deeper (longer). This mount moves the light forward a little to help it fit. Just to be clear, you are getting the HM2 mount shown, NOT a headlight or anything else shown in the pictures. No bolts or hardware are included. |

1) BUDS -that do their job and won't fall out when you move around..
I have found the best type for the bike is the type with buds which work like PPE hearing protection plugs.
2) EASE OF USE - On the Goldwing I have a volume control, but on the Drifter you have to screw around with the ipod/mp3 player to deal with volume... not a good option. So I wanted some with a built in volume control on the cord.
3) NOISE REDUCTION - I looked at active and passive noise reduction. The type of plug indicated above will provide adequate noise reduction. You still want to hear traffic around you.
4) PERFORMANCE - I want my music to sound good and I hate "tinny" sounding buds.
I did a lot of research, spent too much money, did finally find some that meet my requirements.

PROTECTION – not just decoration. 1-1/8 x .093 heavy walled tubing that is roll die formed to prevent flat spots and “knuckles”. Mounting brackets are 3/16 steel, TIG welded, that attach to the top shock mount and passenger peg brackets.
STYLE. Drop loop design is a copy of the OEM bars on the original Indian Chief from the 40s and 50s, and adds to the vintage look of your Drifter. It’s also a great match in size and design for the Kawasaki OEM front bar and they look like a complete set.
PRACTICALITY. Bars were designed to work with all production saddlebags and custom seats, and will serve as passenger foot rests where 2-up seating is used.
Rear bars are also available for the 2000 800 Drifter with the OEM 2-up seat bracket. Still working on bars for the 2001 and up 800 models with the solo saddle. |

The end result should be smooth from screw end to the push pull end. I left the last collar before the push/pull end and could never get the grip needed to hold the throttle open. When I ground down that collar/stop it worked fine. |

The Grip End piece allows you to add an Aeromach mirror to the end of you Aeromach grip (left side only).
Simply remove the threaded cap from the left side and thread on the Grip End pc. Then select an Aeromach mirror to attatch to the end of your grip. We find that the small oval, large oval, classic round and street fighter look the best.

Easy Off Saddlebag Mounting System For The Kawasaki Drifter 1500 Motorcycle
Our saddlebags go on and off by securing the saddlebags with wing nuts. The wing nuts are simple to use and securely mount the saddlebags to the cycle. Below are the instructions of how to mount the saddlebags to the bike using the Easy Off brackets. The Easy Off Saddlebag Mounting System with the flat plate bracket is manufactured specifically for the Kawasaki Drifter 1500 motorcycle. The system is not universal.
1. Hold up the large Ľ” steel flat plate bracket up to the rear fender with the two holes with the bolts just above the helmet lock making sure you choose the bracket which flanges further away from the fender. (The brackets have a right and left side.)
2. Slide the 3” bolts through the large, Ľ” flat brackets two upper holes and slide on one tube of the tubed bracket support.
3. Put on a washer and secure the tube with a nut.
4. Secure the other tube as done in step 3.
5. Tighten the lower two acorn nuts at the bottom of the side rods.
6. Remove the two bolts above the helmet lock. Remove the same bolts on the other side of the bike.
7. Bolt up the large flat brackets with the attached bag supports to the threaded hole with the provided 10mm bolts.
8. Hold up the saddlebag against the studs making sure the bag is level and at least 1.5” above the muffler and mark where the studs hit the bag.
9. Drill out the bag’s back at the stud’s mark on the back of the saddlebag first using a Ľ” or so pilot bit. Then enlarge the hole. Slide on a washer to the two studs. Slide on the saddlebag to the studs.
10. Tighten up the saddlebags on the studs with a washer and a wing nut.
Drifter 800 mounting directions:
1. Bolt tongue on the bracket to the bolt in
the seat frame.
2. Hold up the saddlebag to the rounded rectangular portion of the bracket for placement keeping the saddlebag at least 1.5" above the muffler.
3. Mark one hole of the top 2 bracket holes &drill out the back of the saddlebag.
4. Bolt the bag to the bracket with the washer's, bolts & nuts provided.
5. Mark the other hole, drill it out & bolt up the saddlebag as done with the first bolt.

They were tested in the field for over one year prior to initial release, with various modifications implemented to the design to improve stability, minimize flex while forcing heavy items into bags, and accommodate a wide multitude of accessories on Drifter motorcycles. These mounts _WILL NOT_ accidentally detach from the motorcycle when negotiating the roughest of terrain, nor will they flex and move about into the moving parts of your Drifter's rear suspension while under load. While this system is not "instantly removable", it is VERY secure, removes quickly while leaving the more difficult installation components in place, and won't allow your bags to be stolen by any passer-by!

A fender rack designed to fit behind a solo saddle on 800 and 1500 Drifters that is a copy of the original Indian racks from the 40's and 50's. You can see one mounted on a Chief in the photo, and Kiwi still lists them in their catalogue.
These are new units, chrome or gloss black powder coated, and include complete hardware and mounting instructions. The black finish is very distinctive, reflecting a post WWII bike when chrome was not available, and adds a very nostalgic touch to the Drifter. This is not a passenger seat, but functional for a small bag, roll pack, or strapped on items up to 10 lbs.
There is one on my 1500 Drifter in the photo. I do carry a 32" duffle bag with full camping gear that weights between 25-30 lbs. The weight is distributed evenly between the rack and saddle bag supports on each side, and over 30K mile of hard riding with this setup has shown no fender damage or problems. Also, the low center of gravity with the load in this position helps handling and doesn't effect gas mileage like a pack sticking up to catch the wind. |

So what's a buttpad?
A buttpad has no synthetic padding - it is a piece of 100% natural sheepskin sheared to a 1" loft and contoured to fit
basic seat sizes. The design is very simple - the pad is held in place by a single strap and retained by two quick
releases for easy removal. In addition to the strap, the underside is left natural (uncovered) in order to create
additional friction to keep the cover from sliding around on the seat. The strap remains under your seat for most
bikes and is adjustable. This is a surface pad only, not an upholstered item (that's why it's called a "buttpad"). Its
simplicity also keeps the price down. All in all, buttpads are used for riding comfort, either instead of or in addition to
buying an expensive aftermarket seat, to enable us to stay in the saddle longer!

Universal Trailer Isolator Harness |
This isolator unit is designed to prevent any damage or malfunction of electronic ignition, fuel injection, ABS braking systems and other sensitive electrical components on most motorcycles. The O.E.M. taillight circuits, wires and fuses are not heavy duty enough to handle the additional load from trailer lighting. This causes both the motorcycle and trailer lights to become dim as well as overheat the wiring and blow fuses. The isolator draws all the power required for the trailer lighting directly from the battery positive (+) terminal through it's own heavy duty wiring and fuse. The isolator electronic components sense the need for power to the taillights and are activated through its smaller gauge wires, which connect to the motorcycles taillight. It will provide full battery voltage to the trailers taillights. This allows both the trailer and motorcycles taillights to be at full intensity. It measures 1 inch x 1 1/2 inch x 3 inch long, has a peel and stick adhesive backing and 36 inch wire leads in a loom ready to accept any trailer plug, making it easy to install and conceal. Comes complete with all connectors needed for the motorcycle and detailed instructions. |

I have to give credit where due, the idea came from other posts using dice, figureheads or skulls. My thought was these options did not look mechanical enough for my taste. The process was easy enough once a suitable top lever was found. I knew in my mind what I wanted but did not know where to find such a lever. The sad / funny part is I shoot an over/under shotgun competitively most every weekend and push exactly what I wanted every time I opened the gun. The exact lever (referred to as a top lock) is used to open the gun breech. |

Which grade Gasoline to use in a drifter... |
I'm glad you asked. I wanted to create a sticky post on this subject anyway.
GENERAL INFO:
In the USA, all vehicle gasoline is unleaded and is available in several grades, differentiated by octane rating.
Usually:
Regular = 87,
Mid-Grade = 89,
and Premium = 93.
Of course CA is different... max octane is usually 91. In some of the Mountain States regular can be as low as 85 octane.
In the USA gasoline is described in terms of "pump octane" - the octane rating you (usually) see on the pump is the average of the RON and MON (See below). Some other countries use the RON or MON ratings, so you can't compare them to the US Pump Octane.
DRIFTER SPECIFIC:
As with any piece of equipment its best to go with what the manufacturer recommends. Kawasaki says to use clean, fresh unleaded gasoline with a minimum Antiknock Index of 90. The antiknock index is an average of the Research Octane Number (RON) and the Motor Octane Number (MON). As indicated, this is typically the number you see on the fuel pump.
Antiknock Index = (RON+MON)/2 ---- Min Rating = 90
Minimum RON = 95
The Owner's manual indicates the following:
"Use minimum of 90 octane gasoline only to prevent severe engine damage"
So, you should follow their recommendation and use PREMIUM Fuel... which will usually be 93 octane.
If you get engine knocking or pinging and you are using the recommended octane fuel, try a different brand. Never let knocking/pinging continue, it might lead to engine problems.
GASOLINE/ALCOHOL:
There are blends of gasoline which use ethers, ethanol and methanol.
Gasoline/Ether - The most common blend would be MTBE - gasoline and Methyl tertiary butyl. You can use gasoline containing up to 15% MTBE.
Gasoline/Methanol - Avoid this fuel if possible. Never use any fuel containing more than 5% of methanol. This fuel must also be blended with cosolvents and corrosion inhibitors.
Gasoline/Ethanol - The 10% ethanol we see is acceptable. Don't use any fuel with more than 10% ethanol.
WINTER STORAGE:
Kaw says to properly prepare your bike if you aren't going to use it for 30 - 60 days. We always assume a fuel stabilizer will keep things squared away during storage. But fuels with ethanol (most of them nowadays) apparently present a problem. Kaw says to never store the bike with gasohol in the tank... something we all likely do! |

Defect Summary:
VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: MOTORCYCLES (VN1500-J1/L) EQUIPPED WITH A DIGITAL FUEL INJECTION SYSTEM AND A VEHICLE-DOWN SENSOR. THIS FEATURE IS DESIGNED TO PREVENT THE FUEL INJECTION SYSTEM FROM CONTINUING TO PUMP FUEL IF THE MOTORCYCLE FALLS DOWN, BY SHUTTING OFF THE IGNITION AND FUEL INJECTION PUMP. DURING BATTERY MAINTENANCE, THE VEHICLE-DOWN SENSOR CAN BE DISLODGED FROM ITS NORMAL MOUNTED POSITION. IF THE SENSOR IS OUT OF POSITION, THE MOTORCYCLE MAY NOT START OR MAY STALL DURING CERTAIN DRIVING MANEUVERS.
Consequence Summary:
IF THE SENSOR IS NOT CORRECTLY INSTALLED, THE ENGINE CAN CRANK BUT NOT START OR THE ENGINE COULD STOP DURING CERTAIN RIDING SITUATIONS, LIKE LEANING OVER IN A TURN. SUDDEN LOSS OF ENGINE POWER COULD CAUSE THE OPERATOR TO LOSE THEIR BALANCE RESULTING IN INJURY OR DEATH.
Corrective Summary:
DEALERS WILL INSPECT FOR PROPER MOUNTING OF THE SENSOR AND RE-INSTALL IF IT IS NOT IN THE CORRECT POSITION. DEALERS WILL ALSO AFFIX TO THE MOTORCYCLE FRAME, A WARNING LABEL THAT PROVIDES INSTRUCTIONS ON REPOSITIONING THE VEHICLE-DOWN SENSOR AFTER SERVICING THE BATTERY.

I drained the oil from the shocks again and filled them with 60 ml of 15W-50 synthetic oil. I found that the 70 ml of oil made it just a little too stiff. With the 60 ml I can adjust the air pressure as needed and put in 40 psi which gave me the most option. Soft ride at 40 psi, dampener at 1 and stiff ride at dampener setting of 4 suitable for 2 folks. Lets face it, air is easier to adjust than oil. It is easy to add the oil but a pain to remove. A strange note though, even though the oil had been in the shocks for less than a day, it had already turned black. I assume that it is because of the bladder. I am guessing that the bladders are made of material similar to inner tubes and that would explain the dark color of the oil.

Removal / Reinstallation |
From the 800 Drifter manual, instructions for the removal and re-installation of the rear (mono)shock.
The book says:
- Remove the pipes, storage box and tool kit container
- Using a jack raise the rear wheel off the ground
- Squeeze the brake lever slowly and tie off with a band... this is a must as the bike may fall over when the shock is removed.
- Remove the lower shock bolt
- Remove the Tie-Rod bolt
- Remove the upper shock bolt
- Remove the shock.
Reinstall -
- pack the rocker arm needle bearings with grease
- install the shock so the spring adjust bolt is to the left side.
- tighten - Shock bolts - 43ft-lbs, Tie-rod nuts - 43ft-lbs
Note: the stock shock is filled with nitrogen, so don't burn it without releasing the gas... it might explode. Of course, if the shock is still good you might want to sell it or donate it. |

Here is some info from Kawasaki which may be of value concerning cleaning and maintaining plastic windshields...
To clean, pre-rinse screen with water to remove grit and soften dirt. Use mild soap, lots of warm water, and a clean soft cloth or sponge. Rinse well to remove all soap residue. Pat dry, do not wipe dry.
Washing may be followed by Meguiars plastic cleaner and polish (M1708 and M1008), Johnson paste wax, Kawasaki Plastic Cleaner and Polish (K61080-113), or other similar products that remove or minimize hairline scratches or abrasions.
CAUTION:
DO NOT use any other types of cleaners, chemicals, or solvents not designed especially for plastic on this windshield. If there is a chemical incompatibility with the windshield material, permanent windshield cracking or surface damage may result.
Do not clean in hot sun or high temperatures.
Plasticizers from new motorcycle covers that are made from PVC may damage your windshield. Do not use a new cover for a few days. Remove it from its package and leave in the sun or other warm location. |

Check the Charging system |
You can replace the battery, but if its the rectifier you will run fine for a while until the battery discharges then the bike will quit. Short runs will likely not "prove" the fault. I had a bad rectifier on a HD, it ran fine on the short hauls... would sit a while and recharge enough to start.
A 5 yo battery is a failure waiting to happen. It may simply not be able to handle the load anymore, so no matter what the rectifier does it will eventually discharge enough to be a problem.
To test the charging system, you should be able to start the bike and put a tester across the battery terminals...(+/+ and -/-). 25VDC range on the tester. At 3000 rpm the bike tester should read between 14 and 15v.
If the voltage is a lot higher than 15v then the rectifier is bad or the reg/rect wires could be loose/open/etc.
If the v is a lot lower than 14v then its either the rectifier or you have a load problem on the alternator.
Obviously of the charging system is within spec, you have a battery problem. |

What you need:
- Amber spotlights – both Wagner and GE make comparable units. The part number for both brands is 4415A (for a fluted lens, they also make a smooth lens). I got mine at Napa for about $15/each. These are 4.5” dia, 12V, 35W sealed beam units.
- Ground wire – about 1 ft. I used 18 gauge wire.
- (2) crimp terminals for grounding – I used a ring tongue style (see photo)

Came up with a cheap visor . These were at a local auto parts store for a couple bucks. They're made for a 2" clearance lite. Cut it in half, a little grinding on the bench grinder, drill a hole in the top center to take the signal lens screw and done. There is about 1/4" of the lens showing at the back so a piece of chrome tape can cover it or leave it open so the signal can be seen from the side! |

Wanted to add spotlites to my "new" 01/800 . The Vulcan drill mod seemed to cover up the front signals so I extended the front signals out. I used a piece of top chain link fence rail 11/4" diam.
Cut it 2" long with a pipe cutter, and squeezed it slightly in the vice to oval it. You have to cut a slot in the bottom to later get a 14mm box end wrench in.
Weld a bolt to a washer for the mount to the fork side with a small hole for a bolt to stop it from turning.
Weld in the washer and another on the other side for the signal. A rubber washer, bolt it up, attach a piece of flat stock for the spot lite.
I'm not sure what the finish will be so I wrapped it in silver "duct" tape to see what chrome would look like, or go black like the signal mount.
Cost $ 45.00 for the two lites, the rest just scrap lying around. |

I've been exchanging e-mails with someone who'd had a dealer change his clutch pack and spring. Since the work was done the clutch had worked fine when the bike was cold but once it was warmed up and he'd ridden a little the clutch would start slipping. Any guesses what it turned out to be? It had nothing to do with the heat. The owner figured it out.
Inside the master cylinder is a tiny hole that allows fluid pressure in the hose to be released when the clutch/brake lever is released and hydraulic fluid to flow back into the reservoir. That hole was at least partly clogged. Result, the first few times he used the clutch all was well but the more he used it the more pressure built up in the hose until the clutch couldn't engage any longer..it was like the lever was being held slightly in.
He used a straight pin to loosen and remove the grunge in the hole and voila! No more slipping clutch.

If your clutch seems to stick more than it used to, or doesn't seem to engage as smoothly as it did last year, you might want to look at the plunger on the master cylinder before you break open that clutch box.
Any squeaking or racket coming from the clutch handle can be an indication of a sticky master cylinder plunger.
To correct this you will need to look for the plunger on the clutch lever. Carefully lift the dust seal and spray some lithium grease or silicon spray lubricant on the plunger under the boot.
Try the lever a few times and repeat the process until all is smooth and quiet. |

The threaded caps are left hand threads so turn it to the right to remove. Grips are glued to bar on clutch side and throttle sleeve on throttle side. Check out HAND CONTROLS in the accessories section for replacement throttle sleeves.
Vulcan stock grips are held on with a left hand thread grip cap - so you need to turn to the RIGHT to remove. The clutch side grip is glued to the bar. You can cut the grip or use a long shank narrow tip screw driver to work the glue loose.
The throttle side also has a cap but the grip is glued to a sleeve which floats on the bar. The best way to remove this grip, other than removing the sleeve is to cut the grip. |

The Drifter with analog gauge package seems plagued by a "broken speedometer cable" syndrome. Well, the fix is in folks.

The problem is the that the Drifter cable is stressed every time we get in the throttle. The Drifter with it's FI fully extends the front forks when you grab a hand full of throttle. Just get the speedo cable for the Nomad, it is about 4" longer and will no put stress on it when grabbing a hand full.

How to Adjust the Chain on an 800 Drifter |
Unlike its shaft-driven 1500cc counterpart, Kawasaki's Drifter 800 features a chain drive to propel the rear wheel. Regular chain tension adjustments are made using the chain adjusters on both sides of the rear axle. A line mark is engraved into the top of the adjusters, indicating the position of the axle in relation to a set of line markings imprinted on the swing arm. Once the chain has been adjusted, the rear wheel will be aligned using these marks.

Find the tightest portion of the chain by rolling the motorcycle forward slightly and pushing the bottom portion of the chain downward with your finger. Center the tightest portion of the chain between the motor and the rear wheel.

Pull the clevis pin out from the right end of the rear axle. Loosen the rear axle nut using a socket and a breaker, but do not remove the nut. Use a wrench to loosen the lock nuts on both chain adjusters on the end of the swing arm.

Tighten the chain by pulling the rear wheel towards the rear of the motorcycle. Loosen the chain by pushing the rear wheel forward. Push down on the lower portion of the chain at its tightest point. The chain should have 1 inch to 1 1/4 inch of slack.

Align the rear wheel using the markings on the chain adjusters and swing arm. Check that both adjusters are evenly adjusted and loosely tighten the chain adjuster's lock nuts with a wrench.

Check the chain's slack again, pushing down on the tightest portion of the chain to ensure that there is 1 inch to 1 1/4 inch of slack in the chain. Readjust the chain as detailed in Step 3, if necessary. Completely tighten the chain adjuster lock nuts with a wrench.

Tighten the rear axle nut with a socket wrench and slip the clevis pin into the right side of the rear axle to secure the nut.

Check the alignment of the rear wheel before riding the motorcycle. An improperly aligned wheel can adversely affect the motorcycle's handling, leading to a loss of control that could result in injury or death. Misaligned wheels can also cause excess wear on the motorcycle's chain and sprockets.
Check that the chain adjuster and rear axle lock nuts are securely tightened before riding the motorcycle. Loose chain adjuster and axle nuts could create a loss of control that could result in injury or death.

The finish is thicker than a spray and protects the Chair for a lifetime. The cloth is 1000 denier nylon and is cut with heat to prevent raveling. The Chair comes with a bag and carrying strap. |
